King Charles ‘Pressured’ Prince Andrew to Relinquish Titles

London: Tensions within the British royal family have resurfaced as new revelations suggest that King Charles III threatened “further action” against his brother, Prince Andrew, before the Duke of York announced he would stop using his royal titles and honours.

According to royal editor and author Rebecca English, the King’s intervention came after a “tense exchange” with Prince Andrew, who was reportedly reluctant to comply and displayed a “startling lack of contrition.” The confrontation is said to have left the situation “intolerable” for the monarch to manage.

The Duke of York released a statement earlier this week confirming his decision to take an additional step back from public life, stating:

“In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first.”

“I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life. With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

The move follows years of controversy surrounding Prince Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. While the Duke has consistently denied all allegations, the continued public scrutiny has remained a major source of strain for the royal family.

English noted that while Parliament has the authority to formally strip royal titles, the King chose not to pursue that route, viewing it as an unnecessary use of time and resources amid national and global challenges.

“Some questioned whether simply asking Queen Elizabeth’s second son to set aside his titles was sufficient,” English wrote in the Daily Mail. “But involving Parliament could have taken months — or even a year — to conclude. Forcing Andrew’s hand would bring about the same result far more swiftly.”

The decision is seen as part of King Charles’s broader effort to streamline the monarchy and protect its reputation as the royal family faces increasing public scrutiny.
