Karachi: A mild earthquake rattled parts of Karachi once again on Saturday morning, marking the 39th seismic event recorded in and around the city since the beginning of June, according to officials from the Seismological Centre.
The quake, which struck at 9:54 a.m., measured 3.2 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located north of Malir at a depth of 35 kilometres. While the tremors were brief, they were noticeably felt in several neighbourhoods including Quaidabad, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulzar Hijri, and along University Road.
“I was in the kitchen when the floor suddenly shook beneath me. It lasted just a few seconds, but we all rushed outside,” said a resident of Shah Faisal Colony, describing the moment of alarm.
No casualties or damage were reported. Seismologists have confirmed that the tremor was minor and did not pose any immediate risk to the city’s residents.
“This morning’s quake is part of a recurring low-magnitude seismic pattern we’ve been observing since early June,” said a spokesperson from the Seismological Centre. “While these tremors are not severe, the frequency is being closely monitored.”
The recent uptick in seismic activity has raised concerns among residents and experts alike. Although none of the recorded tremors so far have caused damage, the steady increase in frequency has prompted calls for enhanced earthquake preparedness and public awareness campaigns.
City authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and to follow standard safety protocols during tremors, including seeking open spaces and avoiding tall structures until the shaking stops.
