Islamabad: Since Sunday, Karachi has experienced 16 minor earthquakes, the Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed on Tuesday.
The most recent tremor occurred at 9:57 a.m., registering a magnitude of 2.8. Its epicenter was located about 15 kilometers northeast of Malir, at a depth of 40 kilometers.
Two tremors were recorded late Monday night in quick succession—the first at midnight with a magnitude of 2.6, and the second at 12:23 a.m., measuring 2.8. Both originated roughly 15 kilometers northeast of Malir, at a depth of 40 kilometers.
Early Tuesday morning, at 6:42 a.m., a third quake struck near Korangi, registering a magnitude of 3.2 and occurring at a shallower depth of 11 kilometers.
Since Sunday evening, residents of Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir, and nearby areas have repeatedly felt mild tremors, causing concern, although no significant damage or injuries have been reported.
Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider attributed this ongoing seismic activity to the Landhi Fault Region, a known zone of low-intensity earthquakes. Speaking to Geo News, he noted that while this area does not typically experience major quakes, aftershocks could continue over the next few days.
He also highlighted another fault line near Thana Bula Khan, which may be contributing to the seismic events affecting Karachi and its surroundings
