Jadeja–Samson Trade Finalised as Royals Seen Gaining Edge
News Desk
Chennai : In what is being viewed as one of the biggest trades in IPL history, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have finalised a blockbuster player swap involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson, with Sam Curran also moving to Rajasthan as part of the deal.
The trade has been cleared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is expected to be officially announced on Saturday (November 15).
Under the agreement, CSK send Ravindra Jadeja — valued at ₹14 crore — and Sam Curran (₹2.4 crore) to RR, while Sanju Samson moves to Chennai at a price of ₹18 crore. Many within the league’s management circles believe the Royals may have secured a “sweetheart deal,” gaining two high-impact players in exchange for their franchise captain.
Royals Seen as Clear Winners
Jadeja, 37, remains one of India’s finest all-rounders and a long-time IPL marquee star since Shane Warne famously dubbed him “Rockstar” in 2008.
However, his recent numbers have dipped slightly: 18 wickets at an economy of 8.20 in the last two IPL seasons, and 568 runs at a strike rate of 139. The Impact Sub rule has increased pressure on middle-order hitters to provide even greater firepower.
Samson, 31, on the other hand, offers long-term value and doubles as a wicketkeeping option — a critical CSK need as MS Dhoni nears retirement. Still, Jadeja’s influence, fan following and legacy at CSK are considered irreplaceable by many.
An IPL CEO, speaking anonymously, said the trade heavily favours Rajasthan. “It’s shocking that CSK let go a franchise player so easily. After MS Dhoni, Jadeja was supposed to be the face of CSK,” the official said.
Years of History and an Emotional Goodbye
Jadeja joined CSK in 2012 through a secret high-value bid and went on to become central to the franchise’s identity. His match-winning cameo in the 2023 final — hitting a six and four off the last two balls — remains an iconic IPL moment, symbolising his deep bond with Dhoni.
Cricbuzz understands that Jadeja and Dhoni discussed the trade beforehand and agreed it was best for both parties. The presence of rising Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad reportedly raised concerns about Jadeja’s guaranteed place in the XI, while the Chepauk pitch has become less spin-friendly in recent years.
Jadeja leaves CSK having played 185 IPL games for the franchise, scoring 2000 runs and taking over 140 wickets.
Samson Finally Lands in Chennai
CSK’s interest in Samson is not new — the franchise has reportedly been trying to acquire him for the past three years. With Dhoni’s eventual departure looming, the team sought an Indian top-order wicketkeeper-batter to anchor their next phase.
Samson carries strong leadership credentials and recent national-team experience, but his record at Chepauk has been modest: just 59 runs in five innings at an average of 11.8.
What Each Side Stands to Gain
For Rajasthan Royals, the arrival of Jadeja — who once played for the franchise before a 2010 suspension — is expected to bolster experience and stability. While he may not be guaranteed the captaincy, he is set to assume a senior leadership role.
For CSK, the acquisition of Samson provides a long-term successor in the wicketkeeping role and adds a proven top-order batter to their lineup — though at the cost of letting go one of the franchise’s most beloved figures.
As fans await the official announcement, the trade continues to stir debate across the cricketing world, with many wondering whether CSK’s gamble will pay off — or whether the Royals have pulled off one of the most advantageous deals in IPL history.
