Islamabad on Alert: CDA Mobilizes to Prevent Urban Flooding

Islamabad: As heavy monsoon rains continue to lash Islamabad, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched a city-wide emergency response plan to protect residents from flooding and waterlogging.

The initiative, led by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and supervised by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa, includes 24/7 monitoring, rapid-response teams, and drain-clearing operations to keep the capital functioning safely throughout the rainy season.

“Our top priority is preparedness and prevention,” said Chairman Randhawa. “We are coordinating closely with all departments to ensure immediate action in case of any emergency.”

To handle the ongoing and expected downpours, CDA has deployed dewatering machines in low-lying areas to quickly remove standing water. Critical points such as IJP Road, Khanna Pul, and Sector E-11 are seeing frequent cleaning of storm drains and nullahs to prevent blockages.

A modern rain monitoring system is also being installed to track water levels in real time.

Rapid-response teams equipped with advanced machinery are on standby around the clock, while public awareness campaigns are being run via social media and local media outlets to keep citizens informed.

The CDA has also launched an emergency helpline — 1334 — and established a central control room to address public complaints. Whether it’s water accumulation, blocked drains, or sewer overflows, citizens are encouraged to report issues immediately.

“We’re ready to respond swiftly, but public cooperation is key,” Randhawa emphasized.

Looking beyond the current season, the CDA is also working on long-term solutions, including upgrading the city’s drainage infrastructure and launching rainwater harvesting projects to conserve and reuse rainwater.

Citizens have been urged not to dispose of garbage in drains, as this can cause dangerous blockages. “A little cooperation from the public can go a long way in keeping Islamabad safe and clean,” officials said.

With more rain in the forecast, the CDA is calling on all residents to stay vigilant, report issues promptly, and play their part in keeping the capital flood-free.
