Islamabad launches M-tag campaign with Rs250 installation fee

News Desk

Islamabad:  In a major move to bolster security across the capital, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday inaugurated a large-scale campaign to install M-tags on vehicles and motorcycles, with officials highlighting a nominal fee of just Rs250 as a key incentive for citizens.

Excise teams, deployed at multiple locations across the city, witnessed an overwhelming response, with long queues forming at popular public spaces such as Kuchnar Park, Jasmine Park, Lake View Park, Gulberg Green, and DHA.

Authorities said the campaign is part of a broader effort to improve monitoring and curb crime and terrorism in the capital.

Describing the M-tag as a “third number plate,” the Islamabad Excise Director said the initiative, introduced under the Interior Minister’s guidance, will ensure more effective vehicle tracking. To meet growing demand, additional excise teams have been deployed, and installation services are being extended to Islamabad Traffic Police offices.

Officials clarified that vehicles already equipped with M-tags do not require replacements. Only basic vehicle documents are needed, making the process quick and accessible. Plans are also underway, in collaboration with the FDO, to begin issuing M-tags for motorcycles.

With approximately 1.4 million registered vehicles in Islamabad, the affordable Rs250 fee is expected to encourage widespread compliance. While no immediate deadline has been set for entry into Islamabad without an M-tag, officials noted that restrictions will be enforced once the campaign is completed.

Residents have praised the initiative, calling it one of the most citizen-friendly security measures introduced in recent years due to its low cost and easy accessibility.
