Iran Says Guards Seize US Sub Near Hormuz

Islamabad: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it seized an unmanned US submarine near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz during a complex intelligence and operational mission.

According to foreign media reports, the IRGC said the submarine was captured on Wednesday morning and described it as a “smart,” unmanned vessel equipped with advanced technology.

Iranian officials claimed the submarine was added to the US fleet in 2025 and is designed for a range of underwater missions, including reconnaissance and surveillance, seabed mapping, mine detection, and inspection of underwater cables and pipelines.

The IRGC said the seizure demonstrated Iran’s ability to monitor and control activities in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The United States had not immediately confirmed the reported seizure.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world’s most important routes for energy shipments.

US imposes new sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector

The United States has imposed new sanctions on 36 individuals and entities accused of supporting Iran’s aviation sector, the US Treasury Department said.

According to the Treasury, the sanctioned network has provided support to Iran’s aviation industry, which Washington says is used to facilitate the transfer of weapons and illicit goods.

The department said the sanctions also target companies linked to Iranian airline Mahan Air. It added that three aviation-related licences involving Iran had been suspended.
