iPhone 18 May Drop Dual-Sensor Camera Button

News Desk

Islamabad: Apple is reportedly streamlining the Camera Control button design for its upcoming iPhone 18 series, shifting away from the dual-sensor setup introduced on the iPhone 16 in favor of a pressure-only system.

According to supply chain leaks, the component remains in trial production but will no longer include a capacitive sensor. Instead, pressure sensors alone will handle taps, presses, and swipe gestures—similar to solutions already used by OPPO and vivo on their flagship devices.

The current iPhone 16 button combines capacitive and pressure sensing beneath a sapphire crystal layer, enabling nuanced controls but driving up production costs and post-sale repair expenses. Apple’s move to simplify the hardware is seen as part of broader efforts to reduce internal costs, especially as its AI-powered “Visual Intelligence” features face rollout delays.

Industry observers say the decision reflects Apple’s evolving hardware strategy—trimming complex, expensive components while leaning on software enhancements to maintain user experience. If finalized, the change could mark a shift toward more affordable, service-friendly designs in future iPhones.
