“Intelligent People, Amazing Products”: Trump’s Unexpected Praise for Pakistan

Islamabad: Former United States President Donald Trump has acknowledged that Pakistan plays a crucial role in South Asia and stressed the importance of maintaining ongoing engagement with the country.
In an interview with an American news outlet, Trump highlighted the escalating conflict between Pakistan and India, warning that the situation had brought the two nuclear-armed neighbors dangerously close to the brink of war.
“The situation had escalated to the point where nuclear war could have broken out,” he said, adding that missile strikes were intensifying with “maximum force” being used on both sides.
Trump emphasized the significance of both nations as major nuclear powers, stating, “These are not minor powers—they are major nuclear powers.”
He revealed that during his administration, positive and “excellent” talks were held with Pakistan, with ongoing communication aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. Trump noted Pakistan’s keen interest in expanding trade relations with the United States, saying, “They want to trade with us.” Although trade volumes remain limited, he described the overall relationship as positive.
Praising the Pakistani people, Trump said, “They are intelligent people. They make amazing things.”
To reduce tensions, Trump directed his officials to actively engage with both Pakistan and India, encouraging the two countries to prioritize economic cooperation over conflict. “We said to both countries, ‘We should do trade,’” he remarked, confirming that trade negotiations with Pakistan were initiated during his tenure.
In related international comments, Trump stated that Iran is eager to reach an agreement with the United States, while warning Russia of severe sanctions if a settlement with Ukraine is not achieved. He dismissed claims of any political advantage held by the Ukrainian president, calling recent diplomatic progress “the greatest success” that should be recognized.
