India Plane with 242 Passengers Crashes During Takeoff

Ahmedabad: A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 passengers crashed shortly after takeoff at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, Indian media reported.
The aircraft, identified as Flight AI C171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, lost contact with air traffic control after reaching an altitude of approximately 625 feet. It crashed within the Meghani Nagar area, located near the airport, according to preliminary reports.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud explosion followed by thick plumes of black smoke rising from the crash site. Videos and images from the wreckage have since flooded social media, showing emergency teams working amidst the debris.
Emergency protocols were immediately activated, with multiple fire and rescue units—at least five fire engines—dispatched to the scene to control the fire and assist in evacuation efforts.
Authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties or injuries. Rescue operations are ongoing, and hospital emergency rooms across the city have been placed on high alert.
Family members of the passengers have gathered at the airport and nearby medical facilities, anxiously awaiting updates.
