Imran Khan’s Hospitalisation Fuels PTI Pressure Campaign

Islamabad: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) has confirmed that former prime minister Imran Khan recently underwent a specialised medical procedure for a vision-related condition in his right eye, seeking to quell speculation surrounding his health that triggered political agitation by his party.

In a late-night video statement on Friday, Pims Executive Director Dr Rana Imran Sikandar said Imran Khan was examined by a panel of senior doctors after reporting reduced eyesight while in Adiala Jail. Medical assessments revealed increased pressure in the blood vessels of his right eye, temporarily impairing his vision.

According to Dr Sikandar, Imran was initially examined inside the jail by a senior ophthalmologist, who advised immediate referral to Pims for further evaluation. At the hospital, doctors conducted a series of diagnostic tests, including slit-lamp examination, fundoscopy, intraocular pressure measurement and an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan.

The medical team diagnosed Imran Khan with central retinal vein occlusion, a condition caused by restricted blood flow in the retina. Doctors recommended prompt intervention under specialist supervision to prevent further visual complications.

Dr Sikandar said the former premier was shifted to Pims late at night between Saturday and Sunday, where the procedure was carried out in a sterile operating theatre. The treatment, which lasted approximately 20 minutes, was completed successfully, with Imran’s vital signs remaining stable throughout.

“He was fully informed about his condition and the treatment plan, and written consent was obtained prior to the procedure,” Dr Sikandar said, adding that Imran was discharged the same day with follow-up instructions and medical documentation.

The confirmation comes amid heightened political tensions after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged a sit-in outside the Supreme Court, demanding access to Imran Khan and transparency regarding his health.

PTI leaders had expressed concern after reports surfaced that the party founder had been taken from Adiala Jail to hospital without prior intimation.

Following discussions with Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said the party had been assured that Imran Khan’s medical report would be shared with his family. While welcoming the development, Raja described it as “not entirely satisfactory” and vowed continued efforts to secure family meetings with the incarcerated leader.

Conflicting accounts had emerged earlier in the week, with PTI leaders claiming limited information about Imran’s condition. His sister, Noreen Khan, had dismissed reports of an eye ailment, while Information Minister Attaullah Tarar later confirmed that Imran was taken to Pims on medical advice after jail-based examinations by eye specialists.

The Pims statement now provides the first official medical explanation, aiming to put to rest speculation surrounding Imran Khan’s brief hospitalisation.
