ICT’s M-Tag Drive Hits 166,000 Vehicles, but Is System Ready?
News Desk
Islamabad: The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has intensified enforcement against vehicles without M-Tags, reporting that 166,888 vehicles have been issued tags to date, including 3,130 in the last 24 hours alone, amid continued roadside checks across the federal capital.
According to an ICT administration spokesperson, action against non-compliant vehicles is ongoing, with electronic readers activated at multiple checkpoints to identify vehicles still operating without M-Tags. Officials from the Excise Department said vehicles detected without tags are being stopped at various points across the city.
While enforcement has been stepped up, authorities say facilitation measures are being carried out in parallel. The installation of M-Tags is continuing at 17 designated booth points in different areas of Islamabad to accommodate vehicle owners who have yet to register.

Officials claim the setup is aimed at expanding coverage and improving traffic monitoring, though congestion has been reported at several locations.
The Excise Department confirmed that the total number of vehicles tagged has reached 166,888, reflecting a sharp increase in registrations as enforcement pressure mounts. The issuance of 3,130 M-Tags within 24 hours underscores a last-minute rush by motorists seeking to avoid penalties.
To manage the growing demand, special service arrangements have been introduced at selected locations. Director General Excise Irfan Memon said M-Tag centers at 26 Number Chungi and 18 Meel are operating on a 24-hour basis, while counters at Kachnar Park and F-9 Park remain open until midnight.

Despite these measures, motorists continue to report delays and uncertainty at checkpoints, where enforcement teams are stopping vehicles found without M-Tags. Officials maintain that the checks are necessary to ensure compliance and discourage further violations.
The Excise Department has urged citizens to obtain M-Tags promptly to avoid legal action and disruptions during travel. Authorities reiterated that checkpoint readers are fully operational and that enforcement will continue until full compliance is achieved.
The administration has not yet disclosed how long the enforcement drive will continue or whether any grace period will be considered for vehicle owners struggling to access registration facilities.
