How Sialkot Became Football’s Secret Powerhouse

Sialkot: On the bustling streets of Sialkot—where the thud of stitched leather has echoed for over a century—a quiet revolution began decades ago. It was here, in Pakistan’s sports manufacturing heartland, that a humble workshop crafted a football that would soon mesmerize millions watching the world’s biggest sporting spectacle.
That ball was the “Tango”, and its journey from a small Sialkot factory to the grand stage of the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain remains one of Pakistan’s most overlooked industrial success stories.
In an exclusive conversation with APP, Mian Amin Javed, chief executive of the Sublime Group, traced the remarkable path that placed Sialkot at the centre of global football history.
The milestone, he recalled, was born out of determination, innovation—and a partnership that would change the trajectory of Pakistan’s sports goods industry.
A Partnership That Changed Everything
The story began in 1974, when Sublime Sports became the first Sialkot-based company to secure a formal partnership with German sports giant Adidas. What followed was a two-decade collaboration that laid the groundwork for Pakistan’s dominance in football manufacturing.
“We supplied Adidas with official match balls for six consecutive World Cups—from 1978 to 1998,” Javed said, a quiet pride evident in his voice. “At one point, Sublime was producing nearly 85 percent of the global supply of Adidas footballs.”
Among those iconic creations was the Tango, a ball so acclaimed it later inspired a documentary titled The Ball Named Tango. Its distinctive design, technical perfection, and durability made it a global sensation, earning international awards and multilingual recognition.
A Local Industry Rises
Sublime’s influence, however, extended far beyond its own factory walls. As Pakistan’s football exports grew, so did its reputation as a reliable, high-quality producer in an increasingly competitive global market.
Javed revealed that Sublime had quietly played a crucial role in shaping industry-wide progress—most notably by helping build bridges between multinational brands and local manufacturers.
He recalled how Sublime assisted in securing a partnership between Nike and SAGS Sports, providing technical and production guidance to help the smaller manufacturer meet strict international standards.
“That support strengthened SAGS Sports and, in turn, strengthened Pakistan’s name in the global supply chain,” he said.
A Legacy Rooted in Excellence
The foundations of that legacy were laid by the late Prof. Amin Javeid—an educator, religious scholar, and visionary entrepreneur who established Sublime Sports with a commitment to craftsmanship that soon became synonymous with Sialkot itself.
Under his leadership, Sublime not only mastered the art of ball-making but also inspired a generation of manufacturers to compete on global benchmarks. Today, Sialkot’s reputation as a world hub for premium sports gear owes much to the standards set by pioneers like the Sublime Group.
Keeping Pakistan’s Name at the Centre of the World Stage
For Javed, the story of the Tango is not a chapter of the past—it is a reminder of what Pakistan’s industries can achieve when driven by passion and purpose.
“Our mission has always been rooted in the national interest,” he said. “If industry leaders prioritize excellence and innovation, Pakistan will continue to shine internationally.”
His message to fellow manufacturers was simple yet powerful, “Build for the future, and build for the country.”
And in Sialkot—the small city with a global footprint—the echo of that philosophy continues to resonate, one handcrafted football at a time.
