Karachi: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Saturday said the fire at Gul Plaza shopping mall on M.A. Jinnah Road has largely been brought under control, while the cooling process is currently underway.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Sharjeel said precious lives were lost in the tragic fire. “This is a deeply tragic incident, and the government stands shoulder to shoulder with the affected families in their grief,” he said.
He stated that immediately after receiving information about the fire, government machinery reached the site and has remained present since night, utilizing all available resources to control the blaze. He added that around 40 snorkels are participating in the firefighting operation.
“The fire has largely been controlled, but the government will not be satisfied until the cooling process is completed 100 percent,” he emphasized.

Sharjeel said a complete inquiry into the incident is underway to determine the cause of the fire. A fact-finding report will be prepared, and future action will be taken in light of its findings.
He confirmed that six people, including one rescue worker, lost their lives in the incident. Due to suffocation, more than 17 individuals were shifted to hospitals, several of whom have since been discharged after receiving medical treatment.
Noting that Gul Plaza is an old building, the senior minister said the final cause of the fire would only be known after investigations are completed. He stressed that the government is avoiding speculation and is examining the matter from all angles.
He said modern equipment, including high-reach snorkels, foam and cooling systems, is being used in the rescue and firefighting operations, while all relevant departments are continuously monitoring the situation.
Sharjeel added that after a complete assessment of losses, the government would decide on the future course of action. He assured that maximum possible assistance would be provided to the affected traders and individuals within the framework of law and regulations.
“At present, the government’s top priority is rescue operations, completion of the cooling process and the protection of human lives,” he said.
