Growing Suicide Incidents Among Youth

PASNI: It is a tragic reality that the suicide rate in Balochistan, particularly among educated individuals, has been on the rise. Suicide is a complex problem and tackling it requires a multi-faceted approach. There are several factors that may be contributing to the increase in suicide rates among educated people in Balochistan, specifically Makran.
One of the most significant factors is the lack of job opportunities in the province, particularly for individuals with higher education. In a region where the majority of the population lives in poverty, the few available employment opportunities are reserved for those who possess political connections or have access to wealth. This leaves many educated individuals feeling hopeless and unfulfilled, which may contribute to suicidal ideation.
Another factor that may be contributing to the high suicide rates is the lack of mental health services and resources in the region. The taboo surrounding mental health issues makes it difficult for people to seek necessary help, and the limited resources available make it even more challenging for them to receive adequate care. Combined with social isolation, this can lead to feelings of hopelessness and despair, increasing the risk of suicide.
Furthermore, living in a conflict-prone region like Balochistan can also have a significant impact on an individual’s mental health. The prolonged insurgency and military operations have had severe socio-economic and psychological effects on the population, particularly in terms of trauma, displacement and the loss of a loved one. Some argue that the uncertainty and insecurity created by these conflicts have contributed to feelings of hopelessness and despair among educated individuals, leading to a higher risk of suicide.
The way forward requires a multi-faceted approach that involves addressing the root causes of suicide in the region. The government must work to create more job opportunities for educated individuals, particularly in areas related to their field of study. Additionally, more resources and support must be made available for those struggling with mental health issues. Public awareness campaigns can help break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues, encouraging people to seek help when they need it.
The high suicide rate among educated individuals is a tragedy that must be addressed urgently. In order to stop the alarming trend of rising suicide rates, several steps need to be taken immediately. Firstly, there is a dire need for the provision of mental health services and resources in the region. To improve mental health services, it is also essential to tackle the socio-economic problems that contribute to hopelessness, despair, and suicidal ideation among them. This requires a concerted effort to create more employment opportunities for educated youth in the region.
The government should focus on developing a long-term strategy to diversify the economy by promoting industries that have the potential to create jobs for the educated youth in the region. Through such initiatives, it is possible to reduce unemployment levels. The causes are complex, and the solutions require a determined effort from both government and civil society. We must work to create a society that is more inclusive, supportive, and compassionate, where everyone has the opportunity to realise their potential and live a fulfilling life.
