Govt Probes Who Runs Imran Khan’s X Account

Islamabad: Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik has confirmed that the government is in contact with X (formerly Twitter) regarding the operation of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan’s account, with an investigation underway to determine who is managing it.

Speaking on Dawn News TV’s programme “Doosra Rukh with Nadir Guramani” on Friday, the minister said inquiries were progressing to establish the identity and location of the person or persons behind the account.

“Investigations are underway [into who is operating the PTI founder’s X account],” Malik stated. “Evidence and further material will come forward, and that will disclose where the account’s links are and who is running it.”

He further confirmed that authorities were actively engaging with the social media platform in this regard. “At this moment, all I can say is that there is definitely engagement with X,” he said. “The legal process being followed in this investigation will also yield results soon.”

The clarification follows a series of posts from Imran Khan’s official X account, including a detailed statement describing his recent questioning by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) at Adiala Jail. The interrogation reportedly focused on his “anti-state” tweets and remarks critical of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

Although Imran Khan does not have internet access in prison, the posts provided a comprehensive account of the questioning — the first such instance in which details of his interaction with investigators were shared from his verified account.

The PTI founder, incarcerated since August 2023, is serving a sentence in a £190 million corruption case and also faces multiple trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) in connection with the May 9, 2023 protests.

Last month, a petition was filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking an inquiry into the allegedly inflammatory posts made from Imran Khan’s X account during his imprisonment. The petitioner requested the court to direct the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to trace the operators of the account.

The government’s confirmation of contact with X marks the first official acknowledgment that an inquiry is in progress regarding the management of Imran Khan’s social media presence while he remains behind bars. Input from Dawn.
