Flood Hits Motorway Link Road Areas in Bahawalpur

News Desk

Bahawalpur: Floodwater from the Sutlej River entered areas situated along the Jhangra Bypass in Bahawalpur, which connects the region with the Multan–Sukkur Motorway (M-5).

The Deputy Commissioner’s Office confirmed that the flood had inundated surrounding areas. Deputy Commissioner Dr Farhan Farooq said machinery was operating day and night to strengthen both sides of the Jhangra Inter-Link road to protect it from floodwater.

Residents reported heavy damages due to breaches in private dykes near the Motorway Inter-Link road. Kaalay Khan, a local resident, said villages including Pipli Rajan, Shamsabad, Nawabpura, and Baqa Pur were submerged, leaving hundreds of houses damaged and crops over thousands of acres destroyed.

Another villager, Akmal Khan, said a breach in Bhinda Wais dyke had brought floodwater close to the M-5, though he confirmed that the motorway remained safe due to its strong embankments. He added that floodwater had also reached rural areas including Miani, Warhelan, Ghalwan, and Sadaat.

Rescue 1122 evacuated 220 residents from Khurdpur village near Manga Mandi after rising floodwater from the Ravi River inundated low-lying areas of the city.

According to the Rescue 1122 spokesperson, the evacuated people—including men, women, children, and household belongings—were safely relocated to secure sites. He added that the operation was conducted smoothly, ensuring no loss of life.
