Rawalpindi: Police on Thursday arrested five additional suspects in connection with the Gawalmandi torture incident, bringing the total number of arrests to six, including the prime accused, after a video of the episode surfaced on social media.
According to a Rawalpindi Police spokesperson, no formal complaint had initially been lodged regarding the incident. However, after the video went viral, the police registered a case on their own.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Investigations) Raza Tanveer Supra said in a video message that the accused had been booked under provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act and would be brought to justice. He assured that exemplary punishment would be ensured through strong evidence.
The spokesperson added that City Police conducted overnight raids to apprehend the suspects.
City Police Officer (CPO) Khalid Hamdani reaffirmed that no one involved in the act of torture would escape legal action. “Violence against any citizen will not be tolerated,” he stressed, adding that efforts were underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
