FBISE Introduces New Policy for Matric, Intermediate Exams
News Desk
Islamabad: The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) has unveiled a new grading policy for matriculation and intermediate examinations, marking a major shift from Pakistan’s traditional marks-based evaluation system.
The decision was finalized during a recent meeting of the Inter-Board Coordination Commission (IBCC) and aims to align Pakistan’s education assessment standards with international practices.
Implementation Timeline
The new grading structure will be implemented in 2026 for grades 9 and 11, while grades 10 and 12 will adopt the system starting from the first annual examinations in 2027.

Revised Grading Scale
Under the revamped framework, students will receive grades based on percentage ranges instead of numerical marks. The updated scale is as follows:
A++ (Exceptional): 96% – 100%
A+ (Outstanding): 91% – 95%
A (Excellent): 86% – 90%
B++ (Very Good): 81% – 85%
B+ (Good): 76% – 80%
B (Above Average): 71% – 75%
C+ (Satisfactory): 61% – 70%
C (Adequate): 51% – 60%
D (Marginal): 40% – 50%
Ungraded: Below 40%
Students placed in the ungraded category will be allowed to retake exams in those specific subjects.
Purpose and Expected Impact
According to FBISE officials, the new grading system aims to promote transparency, fairness, and stress-free learning by reducing emphasis on rote memorization and high-stakes marks competition.
“The shift from marks to grades will help evaluate students more holistically and bring Pakistan’s assessment system closer to global standards,” an FBISE spokesperson said.
The reform is part of broader education sector efforts to modernize examination systems, focusing on conceptual understanding, skills development, and equitable evaluation across all levels of secondary education.
