Karachi: In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Karachi, successfully separated two-month-old conjoined twins from Naushahro Feroze, marking a significant milestone in pediatric surgery.
The complex procedure, which lasted between 10 to 12 hours, involved a dedicated team of 10 medical professionals, including four expert surgeons from major hospitals across Karachi. The twins, Naila and Shumaila, were born conjoined on September 10, presenting a rare and delicate surgical challenge.
The surgery was made possible due to the collective efforts of specialists from NICH, Aga Khan University Hospital, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), and the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN), with consultations from experts in private hospitals.
Dr. Nasir Suddle, Executive Director of NICH, praised the teamwork and expertise that led to the successful separation. “It was a complex surgery, but the skill and collaboration of the entire medical team ensured a positive outcome. Both girls are in stable health,” said Prof. Suddle.
Despite facing significant financial challenges, the twins’ family was supported by the hospital, which covered the surgery’s costs.
The twins’ grandmother expressed heartfelt gratitude to the medical professionals, highlighting the community’s role in ensuring life-saving care. “We had no means for the operation, but the support we received has been overwhelming. I thank everyone who helped,” she said.
This successful separation not only underscores the expertise of Pakistan’s medical community but also highlights the growing collaboration between leading health institutions to tackle complex health challenges.
