Couple’s Brutal ‘Honour’ Killing in Balochistan Sparks Outrage

News Desk

Islamabad: A horrifying video showing the brutal murder of a couple in Balochistan has ignited widespread condemnation across Pakistan. The gruesome footage, which surfaced on social media over the weekend, depicts the couple being shot dead in what officials believe was a premeditated attack carried out several days before Eid ul Adha.

Chief Minister Takes Notice, Orders Action

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti took suo motu notice after the video went viral, calling the murders “a blatant insult to social values and human dignity.” Through posts on X (formerly Twitter), he confirmed the victims have been identified and a case under anti-terrorism laws registered on behalf of the state.

“The law will take its full course over this heinous crime,” CM Bugti said, warning that “those who challenge the writ of the state and commit such barbaric acts will not be spared.” He assured that the operation to arrest all those involved is ongoing and reaffirmed that “the state stands with the oppressed.”

13 Suspects Arrested, More Expected

Police have arrested 13 suspects, including the prime suspect, with further arrests anticipated as investigations progress. Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind, speaking at a Karachi Press Club press conference, confirmed involvement of provincial police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) personnel in the ongoing probe.

Rind disclosed that neither victim’s family reported the crime, but the state acted as complainant to ensure justice. He also noted that the victims’ bodies have not yet been recovered. Investigators have sought assistance from the National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA) to identify individuals in the video and contacted the excise department to trace a motorcycle visible in the footage.

Authenticity of Video Under Verification

While social media users widely claim the killings were an ‘honour’ killing, authorities have yet to independently verify the video’s authenticity and full details of the incident. Rind added that tribes and individuals are being traced but identities are withheld for strategic reasons.

Honour Killings: A Persistent Crisis in Pakistan

This brutal incident shines a spotlight on the persistent and deeply troubling issue of honour killings and gender-based violence in Pakistan. According to the Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO) 2024 report Mapping Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Pakistan, the country reported 2,238 domestic violence cases, 547 honour killings, and 5,339 rapes in 2024 — all with conviction rates below 2%.

From January to November 2024 alone, 346 people fell victim to honour crimes. The country has seen a steady rise in such murders, with 490 incidents reported in 2023 and 590 in 2022.

Government Vows Strict Justice

The Balochistan government has pledged to pursue justice vigorously in this case, reaffirming that brutal acts of lawlessness will not be tolerated. CM Bugti’s firm stance underscores the administration’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect human dignity.
