Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari, in his address to the joint session of the Parliament on Monday, emphasized the urgent need for political stability and economic reform to steer Pakistan toward progress.

Marking the eighth time a civilian president has inaugurated a new parliamentary year, Zardari urged lawmakers to prioritize governance and economic resilience in the face of national challenges.

Economic Reforms and Stability

The President highlighted economic achievements, including a surge in foreign exchange reserves and a record-breaking rise in the stock market. He particularly lauded the government’s success in reducing the policy rate from 22 percent to 12 percent, calling it a significant step toward economic recovery.

“We are witnessing positive economic indicators, but we must remain committed to sustainable growth,” President Zardari stated, stressing the importance of long-term financial planning and investment in key sectors.

The President of Pakistan reiterated the need for policies that directly impact public welfare, urging Parliament to enact reforms that alleviate economic hardships. “The nation expects us to provide relief and ensure prosperity,” he said, adding that improving the ease of doing business and attracting foreign investment should be priorities.

National Security and Counterterrorism Efforts

Turning to national security, President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering stance against terrorism. He commended the armed forces for their sacrifices and the success of intelligence-based operations in dismantling terrorist networks.

“We cannot allow terrorism to resurface. Our security forces have laid down their lives to protect the nation, and their bravery will never be forgotten,” Zardari asserted.

He also addressed the root causes of militancy, emphasizing the need to tackle socio-economic disparities. “Deprivation and inequality fuel extremism. We must invest in underdeveloped regions, create employment opportunities, and ensure economic progress to permanently defeat terrorism,” Zardari urged.

Strengthening Democracy and Governance

President Zardari called on Parliament to reaffirm its commitment to democracy and governance reforms. Stressing the importance of public trust in democratic institutions, he reminded lawmakers of their responsibility to serve with integrity.

“The people have placed their hopes in us. We must rise to the occasion and strengthen the democratic system,” he stated.

He urged Parliament to take a proactive approach in addressing political and economic instability, warning that uncertainty hampers national progress. “Good governance and economic stability are essential for a prosperous Pakistan. It is our duty to put the country on the path to sustained development,” Zardari concluded.

His speech set the tone for the upcoming legislative year, reinforcing the need for unity and decisive action in tackling the country’s pressing challenges.
