COAS Stresses Urgent Need for Long-Term Flood Protection Measures

Islamabad: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on Saturday underscored the need for comprehensive and long-term flood protection measures, saying Pakistan cannot afford to lose lives and property to floods year after year.

The Army Chief visited the Kasur Sector and the Flood Relief Camp in Jalalpur Pirwala, Multan, where he was briefed on ongoing rescue and relief operations.

He was received by the Corps Commanders of Lahore and Multan, and accompanied by the Punjab Chief Secretary and senior civil officials to review coordinated relief efforts.

“State Cannot Afford Yearly Losses”

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Munir emphasized the importance of good governance, inclusive progress, and fast-paced infrastructural development to protect vulnerable populations.

“The state cannot afford the loss of precious lives and properties every year,” he said, calling for expedited steps to mitigate recurring disasters.

Commitment to Public Welfare

The COAS highlighted the significance of civil-military cooperation in addressing the challenges faced by flood-affected communities and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to all initiatives aimed at relief, rehabilitation, and public welfare.

While interacting with displaced families at relief camps, he assured them of continued assistance in resettlement. The affectees expressed gratitude for the Army’s timely evacuation and support.

Troops’ Dedication Lauded

Munir also met troops, Rescue 1122 workers, and police personnel engaged in flood operations, praising their high morale and round-the-clock efforts to deliver aid in close coordination with civil authorities.

Later, the Army Chief conducted an aerial reconnaissance of flood-hit areas along the Lahore–Kasur and Multan–Jalalpur Pirwala axes to personally assess the scale of destruction and relief activities.
