Brighter, Bigger Moon to Dazzle Pakistan on January 3

News Desk

Islamabad: Pakistan will witness the first super-moon of 2026 on January 03, according to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

Traditionally known as the Wolf Moon, this super-moon will also mark the final event in the super-moon cycle that began in October 2025.

A SUPARCO spokesperson said the January 03 super-moon holds special astronomical significance as it coincides with the peak activity of the Quadrantid meteor shower, making it one of the earliest and most notable celestial events of the year.

The super-moon will rise in Pakistan at 5:51 pm PST on January 03 with an illumination of 99.8 percent, and will remain clearly visible during the nights of January 03 and 04.

According to SUPARCO, the distance between the Earth and the Moon at the time of the event will be approximately 362,000 kilometres, causing the Moon to appear about 6 to 7 percent larger and up to 10 percent brighter than an average full Moon.

The spokesperson added that super-moons usually occur in sequences of three to four consecutive events. The current sequence will conclude with the January 03 super-moon, while the next cycle is expected to begin in November 2026. No further super-moons will occur during the remainder of the year.
