Australia: McDonald’s fast-food outlets in Australia have reduced their breakfast service hours due to bird flu outbreaks affecting egg supplies.

The fast-food giant announced that breakfast orders will now stop at 10:30 am instead of the usual midday.

“We are carefully managing the supply of eggs due to the current industry challenges,” McDonald’s Australia stated in a message to customers this week. The company assured customers that they are working hard with suppliers to restore normal service as soon as possible.

The outbreaks of H7 avian influenza have been detected at poultry farms across Victoria, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory.

The Australian government has responded by “depopulating” infected farms, a euphemism for exterminating the chickens

Scientists noted that the H7 strain is genetically related to viruses found in Australia’s wild bird population and differs from the H5 strain spreading in other parts of the world.
