Authorities on High Alert as Snowfall Looms in Murree

Lahore: Punjab Health Minister and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee for Disaster Management Khawaja Salman Rafique on Thursday said that all necessary arrangements have been completed to deal with the expected snowfall in Murree, in accordance with the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

He was addressing a ceremony organized by the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) for the provision of rescue and relief equipment to Murree. The minister, who was the chief guest, reviewed the emergency equipment being dispatched to the hill station.

Speaking to media after the ceremony, Khawaja Salman Rafique said additional snow-fighting and rescue equipment has been provided to the Murree administration to effectively respond to any emergency situation.

He recalled that during the worst floods in Punjab’s history, coordinated efforts by the government and administration led to the rescue of thousands of stranded citizens, followed by the distribution of relief packages to over 300,000 affected families.

Referring to the 2022 Murree snowstorm tragedy, the minister said PDMA has taken comprehensive preventive measures to avert any loss of life and property, stressing that timely and advance preparations can prevent such incidents. He added that facilitation centers have also been established in Murree to assist tourists.

The minister urged tourists to check weather conditions before travelling and said PDMA Punjab has been directed to remain on high alert round the clock.

On the occasion, Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said that a rain emergency has been imposed due to unusual rainfall in Chakwal, Jhelum and Rawalpindi, and that more than 1,000 citizens have been shifted to safer locations in the Pothohar region.

He added that the rescue and relief equipment includes search and rescue jackets, tyre snow chains, mechanical saws, winter tents, raincoats, folding shawls, quilts, warm gloves, umbrellas and hats.
