Ali Tareen’s Mock Apology to PCB Sparks Social Media Buzz

Islamabad: Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has issued a sarcastic “apology” after receiving a legal notice from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), escalating tensions between the PSL franchise owner and the board.

The PCB’s legal notice accused Tareen of breaching several clauses of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise agreement and demanded a public apology and retraction of his remarks. The board also warned that failure to comply could lead to the termination of Multan Sultans’ contract and Tareen’s blacklisting from the league.

Responding through a video message posted on his X account, Tareen appeared to comply with the PCB’s demand in form but not in spirit, delivering a barbed and sarcastic “apology” that questioned the league’s management and professionalism.

He began by outlining the PCB’s ultimatum before expressing frustration over the lack of direct communication. “I did not receive a single call, message, email, or invitation asking to meet and resolve these issues together,” he said. “Instead, I was served a legal notice. If you were more competent, you would know these matters aren’t handled this way.”

Tareen went on to accuse the board’s management of being surrounded by “yes-men” and unable to handle criticism, asserting that the PSL “belongs to the fans and to all of Pakistan, not just to the handful of people currently running it.”

Although he stated that his legal team saw no need for an apology, Tareen said he would offer one “because I want the PSL to improve.” His apology, however, reiterated many of his earlier criticisms.

He mockingly apologised for criticising the PSL opening ceremony, saying it was “amazing” to see “national stars lip-sync.” He added, “Perhaps expecting the ceremony to start and finish on time, or the mic to work properly, was going too far.”

Tareen also apologised for being “10 minutes late” to a Zoom meeting and for suggesting that “the PSL would not have bugs,” sarcastically referencing logistical issues such as “half of your team in one hotel and the other half in another.”

Amid the satire, Tareen offered a conciliatory suggestion to resolve tensions, saying, “Call me over, offer me a cup of tea and a few biscuits, and let’s sit together and talk.”

The video ended with Tareen dramatically tearing up the PCB’s legal notice, closing with the words: “So, I hope you like my apology video.”

The incident has stirred widespread debate online, with fans and analysts weighing in on the ongoing rift between the PCB and one of the PSL’s most prominent franchise owners.
