AJK EC Proposes Reform for Local Govt Elections

MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission has initiated a move to amend the Local Government Act of 1990, aiming to facilitate local government elections in the region, scheduled for 2026-27.
This decision was made during a meeting led by Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal on Tuesday.
The commission plans to review existing local government laws in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh to propose necessary changes.
A dedicated committee has been formed to draft these amendments, which will be submitted to the government for consideration.
The meeting emphasized that conducting local government elections is a constitutional obligation of the Election Commission.
This initiative is significant for the political landscape of AJK, as it seeks to enhance democratic processes and local governance. By aligning local government laws with those of other provinces, the commission aims to ensure a more streamlined electoral process, potentially increasing voter participation and representation.
Looking ahead, the commission will also prepare a financial estimate for the elections, which will be presented to the government. The proposed amendments and funding requirements are expected to be discussed in upcoming meetings, marking a crucial step towards strengthening local governance in AJK.
