Islamabad: Mental health disorders are increasingly prevalent, with estimates suggesting that 50 percent to 70 percent of the global population will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives, said Dr Malik, a renowned public health expert, said on Saturday.

The health expert emphasized the urgent need for public action to address the growing mental health crisis and combat stigma in a recent interview with PTV news channel.

Dr Afzal Malik, a renowned public health expert, called for a collective effort to promote mental well-being and support those struggling with mental health issues amid an unprecedented rise in such disorders.

Dr Malik highlighted that mental health disorders are increasingly prevalent, with estimates suggesting that 50 percent to 70 percent of the global population will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives.

He pointed out that stigma remains a significant barrier to seeking help, often leading individuals to suffer in silence due to fear of judgment, shame, and rejection.

“By speaking out and sharing our stories, we can break the silence and foster a culture of understanding and empathy,” Dr Malik stated.

He stressed the need for a collective response to the mental health crisis, urging governments, healthcare systems, communities, and individuals to work together to promote mental well-being, provide accessible support services, and reduce stigma.

Dr Malik also addressed the impact of stress and anxiety on physical health. He explained that these conditions trigger the body’s “fight or flight” response, leading to increased heart rate, higher blood pressure, and other physical symptoms.

To manage stress and improve mental health, he recommended a balanced diet rich in whole foods, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices such as meditation and yoga.

Furthermore, Dr Malik advised individuals to recognize and challenge negative thought patterns, replacing them with positive affirmations and self-compassion.

He emphasized that by embarking on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, people can break free from stress, anxiety, and negativity, ultimately promoting better mental and physical health.
