Sargodha: In a bid to empower transgender people in society, the first transgender school has been set up in the district at Government High School for Boys No. 1, Block 12, where more than 25 trans people have been enrolled and have started getting their education.

Education Department Sargodha Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akhtar Abbas Baloch said that the eunuchs would be provided with free books, transport facilities, and a monthly stipend as well.

On the directions of the Punjab government, the school has been established and the teachers of the schools would also belong to the transgender community, while two consultants are deputed to help the community understand their problems, Akhtar Abbas further stated.

The CEO informed that the duration of the class would be from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, which would be 3 days a week, i.e., Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The enrolled transgender students would be given Rs 5,000 as a monthly stipend, Rs 5000 for summer uniforms, Rs 2,000 for winter uniforms, Rs 5,000 for transport, and Rs 2,000 for stationary and books. Abbas Baloch added that the government would also give Rs 30,000 per month in salary to transgender teachers.

People from the transgender community praised the government’s move and remarked that it is excellent for the community’s well-being. Transgender Representative Naya said that education and skill development might make transgender people valued citizens who could contribute to the development of the nation.

In a country where discrimination against transgenders is rampant, this is proving to be a major morale boost for the community. It would begin uplifting the transgender community by empowering them with education and skills, and at a broader level, it would contribute to society.
