Rawalpindi: The initial civil work for the ‘Signal-Free Mall Road’ project, including the relocation of electric cables and gas pipelines, has been completed.
Provincial Minister for Works and Communications, Malik Shoaib Bharth, told APP on Friday that the Punjab government launched the project to ensure a smooth traffic flow on the historic Mall Road.
He stated that over 225,000 vehicles traverse Mall Road daily, and the project aims to provide commuters with a hassle-free travel experience.
The minister revealed that a one-kilometer-long underpass, stretching from GPO to TM Chowk, is being constructed at a cost of Rs 4.3 billion. He assured that all relevant departments are working in coordination to expedite the project.
To facilitate efficient communication between the public and authorities, a joint control room has been set up at the project site.
“The public is facing difficulties due to traffic congestion, but once completed, the signal-free corridor will significantly ease movement,” Shoaib Bharth said.
It is noteworthy that from today (Friday), Mall Road has been closed for all types of traffic from PC Chowk to AFIC. A diversion plan is in place, with traffic wardens deployed to manage the flow.
“However, necessary arrangements have been made to ensure access to offices and commercial establishments along the road,” the minister added.
