Newborn’s Eye Tumor Removed in Lifesaving Surgery

Islamabad: Specialists at Al-Shifa Trust (AST) Eye Hospital have successfully treated a life-threatening congenital eye tumor in a two-year-old girl, Mirha Ameer, from Gujar Khan. The groundbreaking procedure not only saved her life but also preserved 50% of her vision.

Dr. Tayyab Afghani, a key member of the medical team, shared that the tumor, which was three times the size of her eyeball, posed a severe threat to her life and vision. The complex surgery, lasting two and a half hours, was successfully performed, allowing the child to live a normal life.

Dr. Afghani explained that congenital eye tumors are present at birth and can affect the orbit or the eye itself. Left untreated, these tumors can lead to vision loss, disfigurement, and even life-threatening complications as they may spread to the brain, optic nerve, or other parts of the body.

Symptoms of Congenital Eye Tumors:

Blurry vision or floaters

Light sensitivity

Lumps on or around the eye

Redness, swelling, or bulging of the eye

Changes in pupil shape or eye movement

Eye pain

Over the past three years, Al-Shifa Eye Cancer Center has made remarkable progress, successfully performing 2,500 chemotherapy sessions for children diagnosed with eye cancer. According to Dr. Afghani, 2,000 children have been registered at the center, with 500 achieving full recovery.

The center offers comprehensive services, including surgery, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation, all provided free of cost. Genetic testing is also emphasized as a preventive measure to reduce the incidence of childhood eye cancer.

The tumor removal was conducted by a skilled team comprising Dr. Tayyab Afghani, Dr. Mansoorul Haq, Ms. Shumaila Niazi, Ms. Umera Asad, Mr. Asfandyar Amirzada, and Muhammad Tariq.

This successful treatment showcases AST’s dedication to providing advanced care for children with life-threatening eye conditions.
