Shanghai: World number one Jannik Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals after both secured straight-set victories on Wednesday.

Sinner overcame American Ben Shelton 6-4, 7-6 (7/1), putting to rest memories of last ye

ar when Shelton knocked him out at the same stage. The Italian looked confident from the start, winning in 88 minutes.

The US Open champion pulled ahead in the ninth game of the first set by breaking when Shelton hit long, then dominated the second set tiebreak.

“It was very tough, you don’t have so much control when you play against him… I just tried to stay strong mentally,” Sinner said.

Meanwhile, world number five Medvedev took out Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (7/3), 6-3. The pair met for the 14th time, and although Tsitsipas broke in the first game of the second set, Medvedev responded with breaks in the fourth and eighth games to progress.

Medvedev and Sinner have already faced each other four times this year in the final stages of various tournaments. Sinner beat Medvedev in the semi-finals at Miami, the quarter-finals at the US Open, and the Australian Open final. However, Medvedev triumphed over the Italian in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in a five-set thriller.
