Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to address the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 27.

His address aims to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and support for the UN’s role in promoting global peace, security, and prosperity.

Departing for New York on Saturday, the prime minister expressed on his X timeline his anticipation of a busy week focused on global issues, including peace, development, and climate action.

He aims to represent Pakistan’s perspective on these matters while advocating for the country’s interests and strengthening international partnerships.

According to a curtain raiser from the Foreign Office, PM Sharif’s address to the 193-member UNGA will highlight the need to resolve long-standing issues on the UN Security Council’s agenda, such as the Palestine question and the Jammu & Kashmir dispute.

He will also emphasize addressing inequities in international economic relations and the need for reform in the global financial architecture.

Furthermore, he plans to urge the international community to take decisive actions against climate change and the rising tide of Islamophobia.

The prime minister’s participation in the UNGA’s High-Level segment provides a vital platform for Pakistan to articulate its views on significant regional and international issues.

He will stress the importance of placing people at the center of both domestic and global development agendas.

As an incoming member of the UN Security Council for the years 2025-26, PM Sharif will reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to working collaboratively with all UN member states to uphold the UN Charter, prevent conflicts, foster peace, and promote global prosperity.

During his visit, he is also expected to attend several high-level meetings, including a session on the existential threat posed by sea-level rise and an Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace” within the UN Security Council.

Bilateral meetings with various world leaders, including the UN Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly, are also on the agenda for his visit.
