Shijiazhuang: Over 60 species of migratory birds, totaling more than 50,000 individuals, have chosen Hengshui Lake in Hebei Province, north China, as their winter destination, signaling positive changes in the local ecological conditions.
The influx of rare birds to Hengshui Lake is attributed to the favorable water quality, extensive water area, and abundant food sources, according to Zhang Yuguang, a staff member at the Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve.
As many as 10,000 wild ducks are among the observed bird species in Hengshui Lake, with plans to migrate south after the winter season, as mentioned by Zhang.
Situated in Hengshui City, the lake stands as a national nature reserve boasting the largest single water surface in the North China Plain, encompassing a diverse wetland ecosystem comprising swamps, waters, mudflats, meadows, and woodlands.
Recognized as a crucial stopover and wintering site for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, Hengshui Lake has witnessed the observation and documentation of 334 bird species by the reserve staff.
The region’s commitment to maintaining a healthy environment has fostered a welcoming habitat for diverse avian species.
