Karachi: A 4.0-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Karachi on Friday, with tremors felt across several neighborhoods, prompting residents to rush out of homes and offices in panic.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the quake was recorded by its National Seismic Monitoring Centre at a depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located around 100 kilometres south of Karachi.

The tremors were reported from multiple areas of the city, including Landhi, Khurramabad, Malir, and Korangi, according to seismic monitoring officials.

Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, although the tremors caused brief panic among residents in densely populated parts of the metropolis.

Karachi has experienced several minor tremors in recent months, reflecting ongoing seismic activity in the region. The city previously felt a 3.2-magnitude earthquake on March 10, 2026, with tremors reported in areas including Malir.

Pakistan lies along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it vulnerable to earthquakes and periodic seismic activity.

The country has experienced several devastating earthquakes in the past, including the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, which killed more than 73,000 people and left millions homeless, and the 2015 Hindu Kush earthquake, which caused widespread damage across northern Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Seismologists say the recent tremors serve as a reminder of the region’s persistent seismic risks, though Friday’s quake was relatively mild and caused no major disruption.
