Islamabad: Pakistan now has the highest diabetes prevalence in the world, with health experts warning of a silent but devastating crisis that is threatening millions of lives.

Doctors estimate that one in ten diabetics in the country suffers from diabetic foot disease, a condition that can result in serious injuries or amputations if left untreated.

Speaking at the inauguration of a modern multi-disciplinary clinic in Karachi, Professor Zahid Mian revealed that more than 3.4 million Pakistanis are currently at risk of severe injuries or amputations due to diabetic complications. He stressed that diabetes remains the leading cause of amputations globally and is also a major contributor to kidney failure.

“Diabetes is one of the leading causes of stroke, kidney failure, and amputations worldwide. These are not just numbers—they represent lives being lost or forever changed,” Prof. Mian said.

Medical experts also cautioned that diabetes in Pakistan is fueling an alarming increase in heart attacks, strokes, vision loss, and long-term disabilities. They urged urgent action, calling for early detection, lifestyle changes, and effective medical management to reduce the growing toll of the disease.
