Rawalpindi/Islamabad: Security forces foiled an attempted terrorist attack on a joint check post in Bajaur district, killing 12 militants, the military’s media wing said on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), militants belonging to what it described as the Indian proxy “Fitna al Khwarij” attempted to breach the security of a joint check post operated by security forces and law enforcement agencies on February 16.

The statement said troops responded swiftly and decisively, engaging the attackers and killing 12 militants. However, during the assault, an explosive-laden vehicle was rammed into the perimeter wall of the check post.

“As a result of the blast, infrastructure at the check post collapsed,” the ISPR said, adding that 11 security personnel embraced martyrdom in the line of duty.

The explosion also caused severe damage to nearby civilian residences, leading to the death of a young girl and injuries to seven others, including women and children.

Security forces have launched sanitization operations in the area to eliminate any remaining militants. The ISPR reiterated that counter-terrorism operations under the “Azm-e-Istehkam” campaign, approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan, would continue until foreign-sponsored terrorism is eradicated from the country.

“The sacrifices of our brave soldiers and innocent civilians further reinforce our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our nation at all costs,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Sherry Rehman, Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party, strongly condemned the attack and paid tribute to the martyred soldiers.

In a statement, she said terrorists had once again attempted to destabilize the country but were thwarted by the courage and professionalism of the security forces. She praised the 11 soldiers who laid down their lives defending the nation, calling them “the pride of the nation and a symbol of resilience and patriotism.”

Expressing grief over the loss of civilian lives, Rehman offered condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls. She reaffirmed that the nation stands united with its security forces and remains determined to eliminate terrorism in all its forms.
