1,000-Vehicle Parking Plaza on Cards at Jinnah Park

News Desk

Rawalpindi:The government has decided, in principle, to construct a mega parking plaza at Jinnah Park to address the chronic parking problems clogging Kachehri Chowk and adjoining roads.

The initiative aims to provide a permanent solution to Rawalpindi’s persistent traffic congestion, offering modern parking facilities for more than 1,000 vehicles.

According to a senior official from the Punjab Highways Department, the proposed multi-storey parking plaza will be built on approximately eight kanals of vacant land at Jinnah Park.

The state-of-the-art structure will include a basement and three floors, offering secure parking space for citizens and reducing road-side parking on major arteries such as Mushtaq Baig Road and Jhelum Road.

“This facility will help eliminate the rampant parking on roads spilling over from the surrounding areas, enabling citizens to park their vehicles safely and conveniently,” the official said.

He revealed that the project’s estimated cost stands at Rs1.25 billion, with summary approval in its final stages. The project is expected to be completed within one year, synchronized with the Kachehri Chowk remodelling scheme to ensure timely completion of both initiatives.

It is worth mentioning that construction work on two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk and Jinnah Park has already begun, paving the way to transform the area into a modern traffic hub.

Beyond easing congestion, the official added, the parking plaza will improve public convenience and enhance the city’s visual appeal.

“Preserving Jinnah Park’s horticulture, beauty, and recreational value remains our top priority,” he emphasized, adding that the project would further beautify the area.

The heavy influx of citizens visiting district courts has made access to central Kachehri Chowk increasingly difficult due to long queues of vehicles parked irregularly along the GT Road and Mushtaq Baig Road. This situation has worsened traffic flow in the area, making the parking plaza a much-needed intervention.

Urban planners and traffic experts believe that such initiatives will streamline traffic management and significantly ease mobility in the bustling garrison city.
