Yunus Assures Support For Rohingya Refugees & Garment Industry
News Desk
Dhaka: Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus has assured continued support for the Rohingya refugee population and the country’s crucial garment export industry in his first major policy address since taking office.
“Our government will continue to support the million-plus Rohingya people sheltered in Bangladesh,” Yunus affirmed, calling for sustained international assistance for both the humanitarian operations and the eventual safe and dignified repatriation of the refugees to Myanmar.
Muhammad Yunus also addressed concerns regarding the garment sector, with 3,500 factories contributing about 85 per cent of the country’s $55 billion in annual exports.
Interim leader emphasised that his administration would not tolerate disruptions to the global clothing supply chain, which is crucial to Bangladesh’s economic stability.
Some suppliers have relocated production amid the unrest that led to the ousting of Yunus’ predecessor, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
