Youth-Led Drone Innovation Steals Spotlight at NUST

Islamabad: The two-day Drone Techx NUST — the Aerial Tech Expo — concluded at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) on Thursday, bringing together young innovators, industry leaders and drone technology enthusiasts from across Pakistan.

The event drew an overwhelming number of registrations from diverse sectors, underscoring the rapid expansion of Pakistan’s drone ecosystem and the country’s rising focus on autonomous technologies.

Day one featured Aerothon, Pakistan’s premier drone innovation competition, while day two hosted a Seminar and Expo on UAS and Counter-UAS technologies.

Drone Techx NUST aimed to serve as a national platform for convergence and collaboration in the field of aerial technologies. The event received over 100 registrations from student teams, industry professionals and academia, and recorded a footfall of more than 1,000 visitors.

A key attraction was the exhibition floor, where local companies showcased live demonstrations of indigenously developed drone and counter-drone systems, highlighting the country’s strides toward technological self-reliance.

Inaugurating Aerothon, NUST Pro-Rector for Research, Innovation & Commercialisation (RIC) Dr. Rizwan Riaz said the strong participation reflected the talent, ambition and energy driving Pakistan’s drone industry.

The event, he noted, offered a valuable platform for showcasing innovations, testing prototypes and building strategic connections within the ecosystem.

The Drone Ecosystem Module drew significant interest from both student teams and industry organisations, enabling joint exploration of commercial applications and fostering knowledge exchange between academia and industry.

The Drone Racing Module was another major highlight, featuring teams from schools, universities and independent hobbyists. The competition promoted technical skill-building and showcased sport-driven innovation, contributing to a growing pipeline of skilled drone operators and engineers.

Day two’s seminar sessions addressed critical themes including the integration of drones into national airspace, emerging security threats to critical infrastructure, and the development of future regulatory frameworks. Meanwhile, the expo floor featured cutting-edge hardware and software solutions—from commercial drones and swarm technologies to advanced detection, tracking and neutralisation systems.

The event was attended by representatives from the armed forces, government ministries, the aerospace industry, telecom sector and academia, who engaged in discussions on policy, innovation and cross-sector collaboration.

Drone Techx NUST marked a significant milestone in Pakistan’s technological journey, showcasing advanced indigenously developed systems and underscoring the power of collaboration in accelerating innovation, entrepreneurship and industry growth.
