World’s oldest Newspaper, The Observer, for Sale

London: The Observer, the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, may soon be sold to the online media startup Tortoise Media, its owner of over 30 years, Guardian Media Group (GMG), announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, GMG revealed that discussions are underway for the potential sale of the historic weekly publication to Tortoise Media, which was established in 2019. The terms of the sale have not been disclosed.

The statement noted that the potential deal would enable The Guardian, GMG’s flagship publication, to enhance its global presence and increase reader funding while maintaining its status as a 24/7 online news platform.

GMG Chief Executive Anna Bateson explained that the sale would offer The Observer a significant investment opportunity, allowing it to secure its future and enabling The Guardian to focus on expanding its global reach and digital presence.

The Observer, founded in 1791, was acquired by GMG in 1993. Despite the potential sale, GMG assured that The Guardian will continue as a digital-only operation throughout the week.
