Islamabad: In 2022, Finnish elevator company KONE made headlines by installing the world’s largest passenger elevator in a Mumbai shopping center.
This colossal elevator, resembling a studio apartment in size, can accommodate a staggering 235 people at once. Weighing in at 16 tons, it is supported by nine sturdy steel cables, ensuring the safety of its passengers during their ascent and descent.
The elevator’s immense capacity caters to the needs of the bustling convention center, where large gatherings such as weddings and exhibitions frequently take place.
Its spacious interior provides ample room for guests, while its innovative design offers breathtaking views of the surrounding complex and the lush garden scenery during the ride.
This engineering marvel features a sophisticated pulley beam system, comprising 18 large pulleys, nine steel cables, and fixed rails atop steel columns.
Such intricate engineering not only facilitates smooth operation but also enhances the overall experience for passengers.
While the exact cost of this extraordinary elevator remains undisclosed by KONE, its installation by Reliance Industries, India’s largest private sector company, suggests a substantial investment. Nonetheless, the benefits it brings to the convention center, including increased capacity and efficiency, undoubtedly justify its price tag.
