Woman Receives First-Ever Pig Kidney Transplant in America

News Desk

Islamabad: For the first time in America, a woman underwent a kidney transplant from a pig, marking a significant medical milestone.

Lisa Pisano, a 54-year-old from New Jersey, received this groundbreaking procedure at New York University Hospital when her condition reached a critical stage, and conventional dialysis was ineffective.

Suffering from simultaneous kidney and heart failure, her situation was dire until specialists opted for a genetically modified pig kidney transplant.

During the transplant, Pisano was supported by an artificial heart to ensure adequate blood circulation. Following the procedure, she remained on artificial life support for several days while her body adjusted.

Remarkably, both medical professionals and her family reported a notable improvement in her health in the immediate aftermath of the pig kidney transplant.

This development comes amidst recent news of another individual, Richard ‘Rick’ Solomon, who unfortunately passed away two months after receiving a similar pig kidney transplant.

Despite previous attempts with pig organ transplants, including hearts, yielding unfavorable outcomes, Pisano’s case offers renewed hope for the approximately 100,000 Americans awaiting kidney transplants, along with countless others in need of various organ replacements.
