Peshawar: With a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially during the nights, the demand for traditional winter delicacies like Gajar Halwa, Chappli Kabab, Chicken Corn Soup, and Kashmiri Tea has surged across Peshawar.
Food stalls and shops in both city and cantonment areas are drawing crowds eager to indulge in these seasonal treats that not only warm the body but also provide comfort in the chilly weather.
Cold Weather Fuels Cravings
Popular food streets such as Namak Mandi, Fawara Chowk, and Qissa Khwani Bazaar have become hubs of activity as locals and visitors flock to enjoy their favorite winter dishes.
From families savoring freshly prepared Chappli Kababs to friends sipping hot Kashmiri Tea, the streets are alive with the aroma and excitement of traditional cuisine.
“Chicken Corn Soup is flying off the shelves. Last night, I prepared two drums, and everything sold out quickly,” said Fayaz Khan, a vendor at Fawara Chowk. Vendors have also set up temporary stalls in prominent squares and markets to cater to the high demand for these delicacies.Winter Favorites Winning Hearts
Gajar Halwa, a rich carrot-based dessert, remains a star attraction. “I came all the way from Nowshera just to enjoy Gajar Halwa and Peshawari Green Tea, which are renowned nationwide,” said Faraz Khan, a laborer visiting Qissa Khwani Bazaar.
The demand for Chappli Kabab and soups is equally strong, with many vendors struggling to keep up with orders. “Sometimes we have to turn down parcel orders because the crowds are so large,” Fayaz Khan added.
Rising Prices Spark Complaints
Despite the vibrant food scene, consumers have raised concerns over overpricing and hygiene. The festive decorations and bustling stalls, while appealing, have not masked the fact that prices for soups and Gajar Halwa have significantly increased compared to last year.
“While these dishes are irresistible, the authorities need to monitor prices and enforce hygienic standards,” said Faraz Khan, emphasizing the importance of maintaining quality amidst the rush.Safe Streets, Tasty Treats
Vendors credit the rise in food-related activity to an improved security situation in Peshawar. “Even influential families now wait in their cars at Fawara Chowk to enjoy Chappli Kabab and Gajar Halwa with Chicken Corn Soup,” shared one vendor.
The influx of domestic and foreign tourists has further boosted business, reflecting renewed confidence in the region’s stability. However, experts urge caution, particularly in maintaining hygiene and ensuring that stalls meet quality standards to protect public health.
Chilly Nights, Hot Bites
As the cold wave continues, Peshawar’s food scene has come alive, reflecting the city’s rich culinary heritage and vibrant street food culture.
With rising demand for winter staples, local authorities and vendors are urged to balance quality, affordability, and hygiene, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can continue to enjoy these much-loved seasonal delicacies.
