Williamson Leads NZ Against Bangladesh After Hiatus

News Desk

Islamabad: Kane Williamson, after more than a year hiatus since his last T20I appearance, returns to lead New Zealand‘s squad against Bangladesh in the upcoming home series. Devon Conway continues his rest due to workload management, while several key players like Bracewell, Ferguson, Henry, Shipley, and Boult are either injured or unavailable for selection.

Williamson’s last T20 international match was during the India series in November of the previous year. His recent comeback to international cricket was during the ODI World Cup after recovering from knee surgery following an injury in the 2023 IPL season opener.

All-rounder James Neesham rejoins the T20I squad after missing the previous series in England due to the birth of his child. Additionally, fast bowler Ben Sears has been included in the squad.

Coach Gary Stead expressed enthusiasm about having the team together in New Zealand after a year of extensive cricket across various conditions. He emphasized the importance of planning for the upcoming World Cup and the flexibility in squad selection, citing examples like Tim Seifert’s impactful return to the team in a specialized role at the top of the order.

The T20I series against Bangladesh begins in Napier on December 27, followed by matches in Tauranga on December 29 and 31. The squad, featuring Williamson’s leadership, aims to prepare and strategize ahead of the upcoming series.
