Why Pakistani Actresses Are Quitting Showbiz
News Desk
Islamabad: In a changing tide within Pakistan’s entertainment industry, a growing list of celebrated actresses have either stepped away from acting or faded into silence over the last five years — leaving fans curious, and the industry introspective.
Between 2020 and 2025, several prominent names once fixtures of prime-time television — have retreated from the screen.
Whether driven by religious beliefs, family priorities, or personal transformation, their exits signal a deeper shift in the relationship between celebrity and privacy in Pakistan’s cultural landscape.
Among the most prominent is Aiman Khan, who, despite being one of Pakistan’s most-followed celebrities, has stayed away from television since her 2018 marriage. Best known for Hari Hari Churiyaan, Aiman remains active on social media but has shown no signs of returning to acting.
Actress Zarnish Khan, acclaimed for Sun Yara and Ek Mohabbat Kaafi Hai, made headlines in 2023 after performing Umrah. She subsequently removed her glamorous online content and has since distanced herself from showbiz, reportedly for religious reasons.
Sanam Chaudhry, who gained fame for roles in Meer Abru and Ghar Titli Ka Par, officially retired in 2021. She embraced a spiritual lifestyle, focusing on family, though she has hinted at a conditional return, subject to modest portrayals.
Another notable departure came from Anum Fayyaz, last seen in Beqadar and Dikhawa Season 3 (2022). In 2023, she announced her decision to quit acting, citing a desire to lead a more spiritually guided and family-centered life.
Meanwhile, Naimal Khawar Khan, who charmed audiences in Anaa (2019), took a step back from acting after marriage. However, in a highly anticipated return, she is slated to star alongside Hamza Ali Abbasi in a 2025 drama.
Sanam Baloch, known for her compelling performances in Khaas and Dastaan, has largely remained away from television post-2019. Though speculation surrounds her possible comeback after recent public appearances, no projects have been confirmed.
Singer-turned-actress Rabi Pirzada also made a high-profile exit from entertainment following a personal controversy in 2019. Since then, she has devoted her time to religious and charitable pursuits.
Actresses such as Sara Chaudhry and Urooj Nasir, both once iconic figures of early 2000s television, gradually disappeared from the industry, attributing their choices to religious convictions and personal growth.
Ainy Jaffri, after years of absence following Ballu Mahi and Tajdeed-e-Wafa, has resurfaced in a recent web series hinting at a subtle comeback.
On the other hand, Ayesha Khan, who ruled hearts with performances in Mann Mayal and Mehram, left acting in 2018 after marriage. Tragically, in early 2025, her passing was confirmed, leaving fans across the country mourning the loss.
While many actresses have chosen silence, others like Sarwat Gilani continue to navigate selective roles with purpose. From the boundary-pushing Churails and Qatil Haseenaon Ke Naam to her international success in Joyland (2022), Gilani exemplifies an evolving, intentional presence in the industry.
Amna Sheikh, too, remains largely absent from the screen, despite past critical acclaim in dramas like Maat. Her future in acting remains uncertain.
The collective departure of these women reflects more than career pauses it underscores a complex interplay between faith, fame, and self-reinvention. As the industry continues to evolve, the doors remain open for potential returns reminding audiences that the journey of a public figure often unfolds far beyond the screen.
