Why is Saba Qamar facing court over a police uniform?

Lahore: Actor Saba Qamar, currently earning widespread acclaim for her performance in Geo Entertainment’s drama Case No 9, has landed in legal trouble after a petition was filed seeking the registration of a case against her for the alleged unauthorised use of a police uniform during a video shoot.

The petition, filed before a local court, claims that Qamar appeared in police attire without obtaining prior permission from the relevant authorities, which the petitioner argues is a violation of rules governing the use of official uniforms.

The matter was taken up by Additional Sessions Judge Ilyas Rehan, who heard preliminary arguments and objections raised by the petitioner regarding a video circulating on social media.

According to the petitioner, Wasim Zawar, the actor was seen in a dressing room wearing a police uniform and displaying an SP rank badge. He told the court that wearing a police uniform requires a no-objection certificate (NOC) from police authorities.

Zawar further informed the court that he had earlier submitted an application to the Old Anarkali police station seeking the registration of a case, but no action had been taken.

After hearing the initial submissions, the court adjourned the hearing until January 14.

Qamar has previously portrayed a police officer in a murder mystery drama serial aired on a private entertainment channel.

The legal development comes at a time when Case No 9, airing every Wednesday and Thursday on Geo Entertainment, has drawn strong audience reactions for its sensitive and realistic portrayal of difficult social issues.

In the drama, Qamar’s performance as a rape survivor has been widely praised by viewers and critics alike. Veteran actor Atiqa Odho recently lauded her portrayal, describing it as deeply moving and effortless.

Produced by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi under the banner of 7th Sky Entertainment, Case No 9 is written by Geo News anchor Shahzeb Khanzada and directed by Syed Wajahat Hussain.

The drama explores the harrowing realities of sexual violence, courtroom battles and societal pressures, often summed up in the phrase “Log kya kahenge?” (What will people say?).

Qamar plays Sehar, a fearless young woman who challenges social restraints and fights for justice against Kamran, a powerful businessman portrayed by Faisal Qureshi. The serial continues to engage audiences with its raw storytelling and compelling character arcs, with Qamar’s performance being described as among the strongest in recent Pakistani television history.
