Islamabad: Renowned cybersecurity expert Syed Muhammad Anwar has urged social media users to take proactive measures to protect their online accounts by using strong, unique passwords and updating them every month.
In an interview with a local news channel on Saturday, Anwar emphasized the critical importance of public awareness regarding online security. He advised individuals to prioritize safeguarding their digital presence by regularly changing passwords and keeping them confidential to prevent potential cyber threats.
Anwar warned that hackers frequently exploit common and repeated passwords. He cited a recent incident where 184 million passwords were leaked, underscoring the urgent need for users to adopt strong and unique passwords across all accounts.
He further advised vigilance against phishing attempts, maintaining up-to-date software and operating systems, and using reputable antivirus programs to enhance overall online security.
Highlighting the risks of using cracked software, Anwar explained that such versions often lack essential security features, leaving users vulnerable to malware and cyberattacks. He urged people to rely on legitimate, licensed software to protect their data and systems.
The expert also cautioned against the common practice of using the same password across multiple accounts or storing passwords in emails. He noted that if a hacker accesses one email account, they could potentially compromise all linked accounts, emphasizing the need for secure password management.
Anwar advised against storing personal documents such as identification or financial records in insecure email accounts or online platforms to avoid unauthorized access.
He concluded by stressing the importance of raising public awareness about online security best practices, noting that informed users are better equipped to protect their personal data from cyber threats.
