Islamabad: WhatsApp is rolling out a long-awaited feature aimed at giving users more control over data usage and storage space. The new update allows users to select the quality of photos and videos that are automatically downloaded, with options to choose between “standard quality” and “HD quality.”

Currently available to beta testers through the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.18.11, the feature can be found under the “Storage and Data” section in the app settings, according to tech platform WABetaInfo.

The update is a direct response to growing concerns among users about the volume of media—especially from active group chats—flooding their devices and consuming unnecessary data. Until now, WhatsApp automatically downloaded all media in the default quality, often leading to rapid depletion of mobile data and device storage.

With the new functionality, users can now personalize their auto-download preferences based on their data plans, internet speed, or storage limitations. Selecting “standard quality” compresses media files, enabling faster downloads while conserving data and space. On the other hand, “HD quality” preserves high resolution and visual detail, though it requires more data and storage.

Behind the scenes, the feature is powered by a dual-upload system. When a user sends a photo or video in HD, WhatsApp uploads both a standard and an HD version. Due to the platform’s strict end-to-end encryption protocols, the quality cannot be modified server-side—hence, both versions must be uploaded by the sender. The recipient’s app will then automatically download the version that matches their chosen settings.

The feature offers a major benefit for users in group chats, where large volumes of media are often exchanged. Users who opt for standard quality can avoid using excess data on media they may not intend to view in full detail. If needed, the HD version of a file can still be retrieved later from the server—provided it’s still available.

This new level of customization is expected to improve the WhatsApp experience, especially for users with limited data plans or slow internet connections. At the same time, it retains the flexibility for those who prioritize image clarity to consistently receive HD content.

The update is gradually rolling out and is expected to become widely available to all users in the coming weeks.
